My Data Story – Purchase power has declined while poverty decreased in Turkey
The dataset shows us percentage of poor individuals in the rural and urban areas. The data focused the percentage level of poor people from 2002 to 2009. Also the data set examined the issue through rates food poverty, complete poverty below $1 per capita, Below 2.15 $ per capita, Below 4.3 $ per capita and relative poverty.
According to the dataset, generally the percentage of poor individuals had decreased from 2002 to 2008 in every categories. However there were also exceptions such as relative poverty (based on expenditure) is also unstable in both urban and rural areas.
Interestingly, although the percentage of food poverty has decreased both in the rural and urban areas, relative poverty of individuals had decreased inconsistently. Especially poverty percentages of individuals in urban and rural regions have ups and downs at complete poverty and relative poverty categories. On the other hand fortunately, the poverty percentages of individuals at below 4,3 $ per capita per day section has decreased dramatically from 2002 to 2009 in both rural and urban areas.
However when we look at the total percentage of poor individuals, percentage of relative poverty of poor individuals is on the rise from 2007 to 2009 even though previous years it decreased irregularly. These irregularities can be caused by many reasons. Possibly 2008 Global Economic Crisis that influenced not just the private sectors but also government’s investments had major effects on percentage of poor individuals. Also another reason is purchase power of citizens, because ıf relative poverty based on expenditure rises, probably it means that money in the pocket of individuals has been downgraded compared to other currencies. Because of the fact that most of the trading agreements basis on foreign capitals, the up and downs in foreign capital have impacts on our economy and our pockets.
So that, we can easily say that the power of purchasing of Turkish Lira also decreased last decade. If we look the chart on contemporary issues of Turkish economy, we can say there are some development in all part of life. However individuals are not much more wealthy than the past because low purchase power of Turkish Lira.
