Data Journalism Handbook to be translated into Turkish language

After much consideration over the past year and a half, Dag Medya are pleased to have come to an agreement to begin translation of ‘The Data Journalism Handbook‘, following talks withthe European Journalism Centre . The handbook will be transformed into Turkish with the help of Dag Medya’s group of editors and translators.

The book has previously been translated into several languages, including Russian, Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, French, Czech, Chinese , Macedonian and  Georgian. Turkish will be the twelfth language in which the book will be available. The handbook was originally written in English. The book is free, open-source, and is designed to help journalists use data to improve their articles.

The idea for the book came from a workshop headed up by the European Journalism Centre and the Open Knowledge Foundation, and was made possible by an international effort that included the newsrooms of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the BBC, the Chicago Tribune, Deutsche Welle, The Guardian, the Financial Times, Helsingin Sanomat, La Nación (Argentina), the New York Times, ProPublica, the Washington Post, the Texas Tribune, Verdens Gang, Wales Online, and Zeit Online, among many others.

The idea for the handbook was born during a 48-hour workshop held at MozFest 2011 in London, and subsequently spilled over into an international, collaborative effort involving dozens of data journalisms’ leading advocates.

The book is divided into six chapters, with an introduction that explains what data journalism means for news.  It then goes on to explain how data journalism has been adopted by different newsrooms and how journalists have used it.  Through case studies, the book also analyzes some data journalism projects.  The last three chapters are focused on how to get data, how to understand it, and how to disseminate it.

The information and more detail of the the Turkish translation book (names of the team, the  editors and the journalists) will be announced  in the near future by Dağ Medya.

The English version of the handbook can be found at datajournalismhandbook.org.
